Choosing a mattress for coastal heat and humidity

On the coast, summer nights are long and the humidity lingers through winter. Beyond firmness, it pays to look at how well a mattress breathes.

Mattress cores and how they handle heat

  • Pocket springs: air flows between the springs, which makes them among the coolest options. Each spring also works independently, so you feel your partner's movements less.
  • High-resilience (HR) foam: breathes better than memory foam and springs back into shape quickly.
  • Latex: elastic and long-lasting; good-quality latex is pin-cored to help ventilation.
  • Memory foam: moulds closely to the body but holds more heat. If you like it, choose thin layers over a spring or foam core, or foams treated to dissipate heat.

Cover and padding

Check the cover: breathable fabrics and 3D mesh side panels help moisture escape, and a removable cover can be washed. Very thick padding makes a mattress warmer.

The base matters too

A slatted base lets the mattress breathe from below. If you prefer a lift-up storage bed, choose one with a breathable top and open it now and then to air it.

Beating the damp

  • Use a waterproof, breathable protector: it protects without feeling plasticky.
  • When you get up, pull back the covers for a few minutes before making the bed.
  • Air the bedroom every day and, in the damp months, use a dehumidifier.
  • Rotate the mattress as the manufacturer recommends so it wears evenly.
