How to measure your kitchen before asking for a quote

Good measurements mean an accurate kitchen quote from the start. All you need is a tape measure, some paper and twenty minutes.

What you need

  • A rigid tape measure or a laser measure.
  • Squared paper and a pencil to sketch the floor plan.
  • Your phone, to photograph each wall.

Step by step

  1. Sketch the kitchen floor plan as seen from above, even freehand, including doors and windows.
  2. Measure each wall from corner to corner at three heights: low, middle and high. Walls are rarely straight, so write down the smallest figure.
  3. Measure floor-to-ceiling height in several places and note any false ceiling or beams.
  4. Locate doors and windows: distance to the nearest corner, width, height, sill height and which way they open.
  5. Mark the services: water supply and drain, extractor outlet for the hood, gas tap if there is one, sockets, switches and radiators.
  6. Note any pillars, downpipes, shutter boxes or other protrusions, with their size.
  7. Take photos of every wall and of the services.

Useful reference sizes

  • Base units are usually 60 cm deep, with the worktop about 90 cm above the floor.
  • The most common unit widths are 40, 60 and 80 cm.
  • Leave at least 90–100 cm between two runs of units, or between the worktop and an island; 110–120 cm is comfortable if two people cook.
